It looks like the chances for a ride tonight (5/25) look to be slim and none. However, so far Monday, Memorial Day, looks good for our annual ride and cookout. More on that later.
I was glad to see that a few riders got out last Wednesday night (5/18) for a spin up to see the apple blossoms in Gays Mills. Dee was kind (or brave) enough to write up a report. Jim G also sent some info on the ride itself, and Jim D provided a map.
Here's Dee's report.
Since Bob R has been playing hooky out west, this past Wednesday
>> night's ride was led by the Gelos with Jim holding the reins and >> Cathy riding shotgun. Following hard on the Gelos' heels was a posse >> of seven. Howard, Lois, Dee, and Jim D were on their two wheelers. >> (Jim left mascot Honey warm and snug at home.) ChucK rode his trike, >> and Irv and Terry L traveled in luxury in Irv's Corvette. >> >> The temperature at the start of this ride was about 66F. We all knew >> the air was going to cool even more as evening approached, so all of >> us on 2 or 3 wheels made sure to bundle up warmly before leaving >> Caseys. There was a bit of bragging by a few lucky riders about their >> heated vests, seats, and handgrips (you know who you are!!!) I (Dee) >> don't have such luxuries on my little Kawasaki (yet anyways), so I >> was a bit chilly by the end of the ride. I confess I would have >> enjoyed the extra warmth from heated gear, but don't tell the others >> that! 😁 >> >> From Waukon, we followed Highway 9 to Lansing, crossed the River, and >> rode south along Highway 35 to Knobs Hollow Road a few miles >> downriver from Ferryville. Jim then led us on a merry adventure >> through picturesque twisties and turnies, imposing hills, and >> secluded woodsy hollers. >> >> We toured southeasterly along Knobs Hollow, Oak Grove Ridge Road, and >> the unimaginatively-named County Road E to the Citron West and Citron >> Valley Roads, Hughes Road, and Taylor Road which led us northeasterly >> to the tiny town of Barnum. >> >> We followed Highway W into Mount Zion, turned north on 61 to Rolling >> Ground, and then traveled west on 171 through the apple orchards to >> Gay's Mills. Most of the apple blossoms had already dropped, but >> there were still a few blossoms to admire. >> >> We made a brief pit stop at The Marketplace north of the original >> town of Gay's Mills and were back on the road by 7:30 pm to travel >> west along Highways 131, B, and C back to Ferryville. >> >> By that time, we were all hungry and a bit chilled -- the temperature >> had dropped to about 60F by that time. We all made a dash for the >> toasty warm Green Valley Getaway north of Waukon for pizza and >> sandwiches and a few tall tales. >> >> From our start at Casey's to the finish at Green Valley, we traveled >> about 136 miles. >> >> --DeeHere's Jim G's ride report.
Dee sent me her report. Looks good but I will give you the route. 9 to Lansing, south through ferryville to Hobbs Hollow Rd, right on Iak Grove Ridge Rd, left on E for a jog across 27 and back on E. Followed that to left on Citron West road and then Citron Valley Rd, Hughs Rd to right on Tayler Ridge Rd. Followed that to 171. Took a little jog right to Cr W out of Barnum to Mount Zion and 61. Rode that to 171 into Gays mills. Took B then C to Ferryville and back home on 9.
Had them a little lost I think👍 We were wondering where the fakawi indians live
Here's Jim D's map.
Special thanks to Jim & Cathy for leading on some roads that I'm sure were "first timers" for most everyone following. Thanks to Dee for the write-up and adding her personal touches. Thanks to Jim D for the map. Now everyone should be able to take that same route without getting lost! (LOL)
MEMORIAL DAY
On Monday, Memorial Day, it's time again for our annual ride and cookout. After paying tribute to our veterans, we will depart Casey's at 1 PM for a great scenic ride that will end up back in Waukon around 5 PM. We will then gather at the Rotach house for our cookout. Brats and buns will be furnished, so bring along your own drinks and something to pass like snacks, salads, or deserts. If you can't make the ride, please feel free to show up for the cookout. I would like someone to contact Mary (563-568-4070) to see if she would like to ride along and come to the cookout afterwards. EVERYONE IS WELCOME!
