DOZEN SCREAM FOR ICE CREAM

 Our impromptu ice cream run attracted a dozen Wednesday Night Riders this Sunday afternoon.  Howard, Darron, Jim, and Al showed up on bikes, while Darrel, Ron & Helen, Chuck (not Chuckles), and Bob & Julie were on trikes.  Irv & Chris drove up in their support Corvette convertible.

Departing under sunny skies and temps in the upper 80's, we headed towards Lansing on HWY 9 (Helen's favorite road).  After arriving in Lansing, we crossed the Black Hawk bridge into Wisconsin and took HWY 35 south through Ferryville.  Outside of Ferryville we found CR C and headed east until we arrived at HWY 27.  Following 27 south we passed through Fairview and Mt. Sterling before turning back east on CR S.  A scenic ride along CR S took us through Petersburg and we soon arrived at HWY 61 and headed back south again.  HWY 61 took us to our destination in Boscobel where we stopped for ice cream treats at Udder Brothers Creamery.

We learned from one of Udder Brothers owners that the vast variety of ice cream flavors were actually produced by WW Homestead Dairy of Waukon!  

After enjoying ice cream and malts, we backtracked through Boscobel and back onto HWY 61 for a short jog onto CR E at Easter Rock.  CR E took us on a scenic ride west passing through Steuben (all roads lead to Steuben) and all the way back to HWY 35 north at Lynxville.  We followed 35 back through Ferryville to HWY 82 where we again crossed the bridge over the Mississippi into Lansing.  I'm sure we disappointed Helen by not taking HWY 9 back to Waukon, we took Lansing/Harpers Road and Elon Road instead.  We had 129 miles on the trike when we arrived in Waukon.

UPCOMING EVENTS

If you didn't make it on Sunday, or didn't get enough ice cream in Boscobel, you will have another chance.  The plan for Wednesday night's ride right now is to venture down to Guttenberg and sample the ice cream treats at Joe's.  That's always a nice ride and good eats!

NEXT SATURDAY is another RTE.  The plan is to ride over to Larry's Lookout Bar & Grill near Arcadia, WI.  This was formerly Hanson's Holdup Bar that we had traveled to a number of times.  This place always has had good food and has one of the best views in the entire state.  We will leave Casey's at 10:30 AM on Saturday.  Everyone is welcome!

GOOD FISHING--NO WEDNESDAY REPORT--ICE CREAM ON SUNDAY

 While Jens and I roasted on the lakes near Boulder Junction, we were still able to boat well over 100 smallmouth bass in our two and one half days.

I don't know if anyone rode on Wednesday night.  At least I didn't receive a report from anyone.  Maybe it was too hot!

Since it still looks to be warm yet on Sunday, and the Hospice Ride has been postponed, I plan to make a ride for some ice cream that day.  I don't know where yet, but I plan to leave Casey's at 1 PM that afternoon.  Anyone else who wants to ride along is welcome.

ANOTHER CONVOY! ANOTHER RECORD!

 "Looks like we got us a convoy!"  Those lyrics from the C W McCall 1975 song "Convoy" seemed to fit the situation well for the Wednesday Night Riders last night.  We had 24 riders on 18 units which broke the previous record that was set last Wednesday night with 21 riders!

We had three "newbies" with Roger & Susan on their trike and Junior with his Mustang convertible.  Darron, Marie & son, Dee, Chuckles, Lois, Al, and Howard were straddling bikes.  Fr. Sean brought his CanAM while Darrel, Chuck (not Chuckles), Wayne & Sandy, Ron & Helen, Irv, and Bob R rode trikes.  Besides Junior our "support" units were manned by Dale & Greg, and Jim & Cathy.

We departed Casey's with the convoy at 5:30 under sunny skies and temps in the low 70's.  We headed up HWY 76 to Bear Creek Drive and turned west.  Following Bear Creek Drive over to Locust Road and a short jog north again to CR W40.  This county road took us through Hesper and on into Minnesota where it turns into CR 28.  We followed it through Mabel and onto HWY 43 still heading north.  HWY 43 is an interesting ride.  It is a straight shot for the first few miles, then there is a sharp left and another sharp right and on into the small burg of Chase.  From there on 43 is full of curves and hills for another few miles.  When it straightens out near Bratsburg, we turned east onto CR 10.  CR 10 changes to CR 13 at the Fillmore County line.  CR 13 is a favorite ride.  There are a number of breathtaking views from the top of the "mountain" and then the pavement drops down into Houston.  We made a break stop at the BP convenience store on the edge of Houston.  Some of the Harleys and Indian stopped for a drink of high test gas.

After our break we continued toward Caledonia on HWY 76 before turning back west onto CR 10.  I decided to take the "backroads" into Caledonia.  Because of the large number of units we had, I was afraid if we continued on HWY 76 we might be endangered by some motorist who would try to pass us on yellow lines.  I figured there would be a lot less chance of that on county roads.  We followed a scenic path along CR 10 through Sheldon and finally back on HWY 76 just outside of Caledonia.  Staying on 76 we passed through Caledonia and Eitzen on our way back south into Waukon.  There a number of us stopped for eats at the City Club where Bugsy was waiting for us.  I had 112 miles on the trike when I parked her on Main St. across from the City Club.  I have always enjoyed what I call the "mountain" route into Houston, and it was a beautiful night that only added to the spectacular scenery.

UPCOMING EVENTS

You will need a new "leader" for next Wednesday's ride.  Bob and Jens will be up in Boulder Junction, WI, hauling in smallmouth bass.

The Winneshiek Medical Hospice Ride scheduled for June 13th has been tentatively postponed until September.  So we may put together another ride in it's place for that day.  STAY TUNED.

So far, the Larry's Lookout Bar run is still on for Saturday, June 19th.

BIG CREW AGAIN FOR MEMORIAL DAY

 The number turning out for our Memorial Day run and cookout almost topped the record turnout last Wednesday.  We had 20 riders with 14 units show up at Casey's at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon.  On bikes were Jim, Nancy, Al & Marie's son, Marie & daughter, Dee, Chuckles, and Lois.  Greg came on his CanAm, and Chuck (not Chuckles), Darrel, Meryle & Mary, Carl & Joyce, and Bob & Julie boarded trikes.  David & Suzanne supplied the "support" convertible.

Under sunny skies and temps in the 70's but with a threat of showers later, the convoy departed Casey's and passed through Waukon and past the flag display at the courthouse.  We even passed Dale as he was out mowing his own lawn.  We continued out on HWY 9 to the Lycurgus Road where we turned north and followed it to the Iowa River Drive and then onto HWY 26 just south of New Albin.  We continued on 26 until we reached HWY 16 just south of LaCrescent.  HWY 16 took us through LaCrescent and then we got off on interstate 90 for a short fast jog to the HWY 35 north exit.  We followed 35 on through Onalaska and stopped for a break at Kwik Trip and let the Indian and the Harleys drink some premium gas.

After our break we continued north through the rest of Onalaska and turned east onto Riders' Club Road.  RCR took us past the Omni Center and past Menard's.  At the junction, the fearless leader failed to turn the right way onto Sand Lake Road, so we had to do a U turn and head back past Menard's again.  It did give everyone a chance to wave to each other as we passed!  We did find the right turn onto Sand Lake Road and then onto CR S which took us on a very scenic journey to CR M.  We took M over to CR B and followed B over to near Bangor where we picked up HWY 162 and headed south to Coon Valley.  HWY 162 and parts of M and B also provided some great scenery on a sunny Monday.  We arrived at the Kwik Trip in Coon Valley for our second break.

After our break we headed north onto HWY 14 and followed it for a short time until we turned onto CR MM.  MM is a "Rustic Road" that offers some challenging curves along with some great views of the valleys and rivers below.  MM ends at HWY 14 just on the southern edge of LaCrosse.  A short trip west on 14 and we arrived at HWY 35 and thanks to a courteous motorist we were all able to avoid a long wait at the intersection and stay together as we journeyed south.  When we came to CR K we turned west again and followed it on past Chaseburg and on into Genoa where we picked up 35 south again.  After a rough section of 35 we arrived at HWY 82 and turned onto the Blakhawk Bridge and over the Mississippi into Lansing and HWY 9.  HWY 9 took us back into Waukon where we figured we racked up about 160 miles on our Memorial Day journey.

After the ride, a good number of us stopped at Rotach's for our annual cookout and lie telling session.  Jens and Jane also joined us for the festivities there.

Before the ride in the afternoon, a good number of us attended the Memorial Day parade to and tribute for our fallen veterans at the cemetery in Waukon. Here's some photos of that event.  If not for our veterans, past and present, we wouldn't have the freedom to be able to ride today.
