WARMER, BUT STILL PLEASANT/LABOR DAY/COUPLES' TRIP

With the temps in the mid 80's and under partly cloudy skies, 10 Wednesday Night Riders made their way to Casey's this Wednesday.

Bike riders included Jim & Cathy, Chuckles, Lois, Mike, and Lissa.  Aboard three wheelers were Terry, Dave M, and Bob.  Irv roared in with the Vet "support vehicle".

As promised in the previous blog, Bob was going to lead us on the "all roads lead to Steuben" ride, so at 5 we departed Casey's and cruised through the only stop light in Allamakee County onto the Elon Road heading east.

To our amazement, the humidity in the air was not great enough to spoil our views, so we enjoyed the scenery as we turned onto CR X32, aka Waterville Road.  This smooth asphalt stretch took us through Waterville and over to HWY 76.  Turning south on 76, we rolled into Marquette and then onto HWY 18 and scooted across the bridge into Prairie du Chien.  Turning onto Main St. heading north, Bob missed the turn onto Limery Road, so we continued on what is now CR K.  After waiting for a train, we crossed the tracks onto HWY 35 and backtracked south and picked up Limery Road again.  Limery takes us past some ripening apple orchards and up hill to HWY 27.  We followed 27 north to Eastman and then turned onto HWY 179.

HWY 179 is a great 9 mile ride into Steuben!  It is smooth, offers up some great scenery, and some well-banked curves.  After arriving in Steuben, we parked outside of Bob & Lou's Railroad Street Station.

BREAK TIME AT BOB & LOU'S

WE DOUBLE THE POPULATION OF STEUBEN

The air conditioning along with the "warm" reception we received from Bob, made for a very pleasant break.  I've heard that they have a great fish supper on Friday nights, so I hope to return.

After waiting for Chuckles to quit talking and get ready to ride, we departed Steuben on 179 for a ways, and then took CR E on back west to HWY 27.  Many times I had to slow down in order to see the road ahead, because the sun at times was at just the right level to be right in my face and almost blinding me.  We were able to negotiate safely and turned north onto HWY 27.  It was awful nice of the state to repave this stretch of highway for us!

We cruised through Seneca and on into Mt. Sterling where we turned west again onto HWY 171, and down the hill we went to HWY 35.  Taking 35 through Ferryville, we arrived at HWY 82 and turned west crossing on the Blackhawk Bridge.  I noticed that quite a bit of new construction had been done on the new bridge, and the amount of cranes and construction equipment there is phenominal.

After crossing into Lansing, we took HWY 9 back into Waukon, losing Mike, Lissa, Dave and Jim & Cathy along the way.  The rest of us stopped at Uptown for our usual feast.  I had 113 miles on the Wing when I parked her at home.  A little warmer, but still a great ride!

READY FOR SOME ICE CREAM?!

Along with a great ride!  On Labor Day Monday is our annual "Double Dip" Ice Cream Run where we take a ride out of town for a dip (or two) of ice cream and return back to Waukon and WW Dairy for another dip (or two).  The plan is to leave Casey's at 1PM that afternoon.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME!

COUPLES' TRIP

As of now we have six couples ready to roll on the annual Couples' Trip on September 14 & 15.  We are looking to take a train ride and visit a road side attraction filled with metal sculptures.  If you "all of a sudden" think you would still like to go, contact Bob ASAP and he will see what he can do.

RIDE REPORT AND UPCOMING EVENTS

We are back from a wonderful cruise in Alaska with Dennis & Marlene and Jens & Jane.  Sometime when I get a chance, I'll put some photos on the blog.  In the meantime, we have a ride to report, and the chance for three new rides in September.

COUPLES' TRIP

After next Wednesday, Bob will need to know how many couples plan to go on the Couples' Trip on September 14th & 15th.  Again, the plan is to travel over to North Freedom, WI, to visit the Mid-Continent Railroad Museum.  There we will explore the museum and take a train ride on an antique "coach train" on Saturday afternoon and then ride over to Reedsburg for an overnight stay.  We will be stopping for "eats" both days out and back.  Again, Bob needs to know if you plan to make this ride by Wednesday.

DEE AND CHUCK'S TRIP

Dee and Chuck have planned an interesting trip for anyone who would like to go along.  Here's the plans for this ride.

I am sending this to Bob R and others whose email addresses I happen to have. I don't have everyone's contact info, however, so please feel free forward this to others who might be interested.

Please let me or my ChucK know ASAP if you'd like to stay informed about this trip by direct email. Best way is to send a quick note to my email at coyote@acrec.com. Or talk to ChucK if you see him first. This doesn't obligate you to go on the trip -- just to stay informed. We'll also post updates on the WNR blog if Bob R doesn't mind.

Bob R -- would you please post this on the WNR blog? Thank you!

--Dee

LAST WEDNESDAY NIGHT'S RIDE

While Bob was meandering around Alaska, Chuckles and Jim G apparently planned out a great ride Wednesday.  Here's the report and some photos.

Holy Hump Day! On what I would call a perfect 75 degree summer evening 16 riders on 12 units waited as Chuckles & Jim G finalized the riding plan. On 2 wheels were Chuckles, leading the pack, Lois, Bill, Jim D, Bobby D, Jim & Cathy, Mike & Joan and Jim S, newbie. You meet the nicest people at the Winn Med Hospice Ride. On 3 wheels were Irv, Ron & Helen, Burnell & Kathy and Myrta following her dad, Richard's, orders with the Slingshot. Atta girl, Myrta!

We headed out of Waukon on Hwy 76 then turned onto Bear Creek/Big Canoe Rd. When we reached Locust we went straight on 337th St past the vineyards and Winneshiek Wildberry Winery. We, fortunately, didn't lose any riders there. When we reached the end of that stretch we turned South on North Winn Rd, (ironic?) accurately tagged as a Driftless Area Scenic Byway, cruising past Seed Savers then to Hwy 52 passing by the old Nob Hill, which has really gone to the dogs. Actually, it looked quite nice and the signage indicated the Good Dog Center. Just North of Decorah we turned on to Pole Line Rd and curved through the hills and valleys until reaching our destination of Cresco Kwik Star for a break.

Departing Cresco, with the sun to our back, we cruised Hwy 9 past Ridgeway and Pinters back to Decorah where Jim S headed home to Festina and our Winneshiek County friends stopped to eat in Decorah, Jim & Cathy bugged out on W60 to head home while the remaining group supported the Uptown Grill for eats.

I showed 97 miles when I parked for the night. (Should have ridden around the block a few times to get 100.)  It was a beautiful, clear night where we were treated to some great views and got to see fields of lush, green crops along the way.

Hoping Bob is having a nice, relaxing cruise and we look forward to our next Wednesday Night Ride.

Special thanks to Chuckles, Lois, and Jim G for making this ride possible.  Welcome to Jim S, hope he joins us again.

The plan is to venture over to Steuben this Wednesday.  (All roads lead to Steuben!)

DOUBLE DIP ICE CREAM RUN

It's damn near September, and I'm still trying to figure out where June went!  Talk about a summer flying by!  Our annual "Double Dip Ice Cream Run" is on tap for Labor Day, Monday, September 2nd.  The plan is to leave Casey's at 1 PM and grab a dip somewhere out of town and another dip at WW Dairy when we return.  Always a fun time and EVERYONE IS WELCOME.

RAINED OUT

I think for the first time all year, we got rained out on a Wednesday night.  Since Bob will be in Alaska next Wednesday, he has assigned Chuckles to bring along the card for Richard.  Those who choose to come that night can sign the card, and Chuckles will send it off.  Again we wish Richard a speedy recovery, and remind him to do everything the doctors tell him to do!

Bob will return on the 26th and should be able to ride on the 28th.  Be sure to indicate your intentions to be on the Couples' Trip by then.

So long for now, and be safe!

Definitely a family ride!

UPDATE ON RICHARD & COUPLES' TRIP

More good news I received the following notice concerning Richard's recovery.  Also, onI plan to have a get-well card with me on  Wednesday (if not raining) for everyone who wants can sign it.  It will then be mailed to his home address.

Richard will be out of hospital today.  He will be staying at GIFT OF LIFE TRANSPLANT HOUSE at 705 2nd St. SW, Rochester, MN.  No flowers or plants.  Send any cards to their home address.  To visit need to call ahead to Richard or Melody.

 ANOTHER UPDATE

Bob & Julie along with Dennis & Marlene and Jens & Jane will be heading for a cruise in Alaska on Thursday.  So you will need a new leader for the ride on Wednesday night, the 21st.

We will be back on the 26th, and at that time Bob will need to know who plans to go on the Couples' Trip scheduled for September 14th & 15th.  The plan is to leave Waukon on Saturday morning and travel to North Freedom, WI, to visit the Mid-Continent Railroad Museum and take a train ride on some antique passenger cars.  The plan then is to overnight in Reedsburg and return Sunday.  Don't worry, we will be stopping for eats both coming and going.  This has always been a lot of fun in the past, but it is very important for Bob to know your intentions by the 26th.  EVERYONE IS WELCOME!!

HOW ABOUT SOME GREAT NEWS!!

As many of you know, our friend Richard, (the one in the Slingshot), has needed a new kidney.  He has been waiting a very long time for a match, and I am happy to tell everyone that it finally happened!

Attached is a Facebook notice from his daughter that was forwarded to me by Chuckles.  I know we all can't wait to see him roll into Casey's in his Slingshot and a new kidney.  GET WELL, RICHARD!!

Facebook post from Richard's daughter, Myrta Protsman Darnell 8/12/24 @1030am

It happened!!! My dad got his kidney transplant yesterday!!!

We got the call Sunday morning around 1am while we were in Connecticut for my Aunt's (dad's sister) celebration of life. (I believe she had something to do with it.) 💜

scrambled for an earlier flight and was able to reroute us to Rochester, MN.
As of this morning he has already done 14 laps, the goal is to do 44 so overachiever is kicking ass!

(((EDIT: He blew the 44 laps out of the water already, most people don't even want to get out of bed they said!)))

As of now we are limiting visitors at the hospital to our very immediate family because of infection until he is at the gift of life transplant house.
If you want to call, you're welcome to! Also cards can be sent to my parents. I will be driving back and forth. He will be up here for several weeks.
Also PLEASE, PLEASE pray for the donor's family. This gift is so very precious to us and their decision to donate life is a blessing beyond measure to so many.
