GROOVIN' ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON

The Rascals song from the sixties seemed to fit our Sunday ride perfectly.  Despite a rather brisk wind from the south, the sun was shining and the temps were in the 70's as fifteen WNR prepared to "groove" their way up to Rushford, MN, for some ice cream.

This Sunday, David & Suzanne supplied the support convertible while Howard, Al, Chuckles, and Lois mounted bikes with Meryle & Mary, Gary & Gloria (representing the Gelos), Chuck (not Chuckles) and Dee, Darrel, and Bob & Julie brought trikes.

Gary, Meryle, Al, David & Howard gathered on a pretty Sunday afternoon

"Anybody in there?!"
Departing Casey's at 1PM we passed through Waukon and onto HWY 76 north.  It would be impossible to describe the many beautiful shades of green in the countryside this spring!  Arriving at Bear Creek Drive we turned west and followed it over to Locust Road.  After a short jog north on Locust, we turned east again onto CR W40 that took us through Hesper and on into Mabel.  Outside of Mabel we turned east again on HWY 44 and 52 until just outside of Canton where we set off north on CR 23.  CR 23 cuts right through the heart of Amish country, so while the rest of us were dodging "road apples", Suzanne was able to take these photos as we "grooved" past the Amish buggies.

AN AMISH CARAVAN

We followed CR 23 north to Ladora and then turned east on CR 24.  I had heard that CR 23 was closed for bridge repair, but I didn't see any signs.  Not wanting to take the chance, we continued onto CR 24 east and took it over to HWY 43 north.  We passed through Bratsburg and South Rushford and then on into Rushford and the Creamery for our ice cream.

DEE SAYS IT'S MY TURN TO DRIVE AND DAVID PARKS THE CONVERTIBLE
With at least 32 flavors of hand-dipped ice cream, the Creamery is a very popular spot particularly on nice weekends.  Many bicycles, motorcycles and convertibles were out "groovin'" with us.
After our treats we took HWY 16 east just outside of Rushford and followed it along the Root River through Houston and all the way to Hokah.  In Hokah we found CR 18 and took it south to HWY 26 north in Brownsville.  HWY 26 took us through Reno and New Albin.  Just outside of New Albin, we turned west onto Iowa River Drive and followed it to Lycurgus Road and to HWY 9 west at Lycurgus.  HWY 9 took us back into Waukon where we racked up 135 miles on the trike.  Great scenery along with delicious ice cream--"groovin" couldn't get any better!

At this time tomorrow Dennis and I will have landed a boat full of small mouth bass in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin, so you will need a new leader for Wednesday night.  If it's Chuckles--watch out for gravel!

Next Saturday, the 20th, is another RTE for our Wednesday Night Riders.  We plan to leave Casey's at 4 that afternoon for another scenic trip.  This time it's to Norwegian Hollow Hideaway in Purdy (Norwegian for Pretty) Wisconsin.
